Momotako is a Chrome extension with a small Mac helper. It reads a show's subtitles a moment ahead and speaks them in natural English voices while you watch. Sub-only episode? Hear it dubbed tonight, not in a few months.
Needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and Google Chrome.

The subtitle appears in the player. Momotako already read it, cast a voice, and speaks it while the original audio ducks underneath. If it falls behind, it catches up on the next line.

Three steps, no setup each time

Open an episode with subtitles on
On a streaming site whose player shows subtitles, turn them on: English, or Japanese with Standard.

Press Start in the extension
Open Momotako from Chrome's toolbar. The first time, the voices take about 40 seconds to wake up on your Mac. After that they're ready when you are.

Hear it in English
Each line is spoken a moment after it appears, in the voice cast for that character. Press Stop whenever you like; the original audio comes right back.
Nothing is uploaded.
The voices run on your own Mac, and so does the Japanese translation. The subtitles, the audio and your character names stay on your machine.
- The English voices are generated on your Mac, on the Apple silicon chip. No server is involved.
- Japanese subtitles are translated on your Mac too. Nothing is sent anywhere to be translated.
- The dub itself needs no account. Only the private beta invitation does.
One steady voice, or a whole cast
Pick one voice for every line, or let Momotako cast each character from the subtitles' speaker names. Eight arms, up to eight voices at once. Lower and higher voice styles are just that: styles of the English voice, not a claim about the character.
Other voices: Hero, Kid, Steady, Tough, Elder, Villain, Girl, Bright, Strong, Young, Lady. Your pick for a character lasts until Chrome closes.

Light or Standard
Both dub from the subtitles the player already shows. Standard adds a translator for Japanese subtitles, so it can dub an episode that has no English subtitles at all.

Macs share memory between the chip and the graphics, so there's no separate video memory (VRAM) to check. Any Apple silicon Mac with 8 GB runs Light; Standard wants 16 GB. Pricing isn't set. During the private beta there is nothing to buy.

- Listening. Dubs from the audio itself, for videos with no subtitles at all.
- Bring your own API key. Not enough memory? Connect your own AI provider and pay them directly. You'll see what it costs as you watch. This one sends lines to that provider, so it's always your choice to switch it on.

Questions
Which Macs does it run on?
Any Mac with Apple silicon: M1 or later. Intel Macs can't run the voices fast enough, so they're not supported. You also need Google Chrome.
Which sites work?
Sites whose player shows subtitles. We're adding more, and the extension tells you on each page whether it can read the subtitles there.
Is it free?
It's a private beta. There is nothing to buy yet, and no price has been set.
Does it upload anything?
No. The voices and the translation run on your Mac. Nothing about what you watch leaves your machine.
